STORM CHASING USA 2011

Distance driven today: 851kms | Total so far: 851kms

After (kind of - I won't bore you with the details) sorting out phone, internet and hire car logistics, it was time to hit the road. The area around Oklahoma City, Oklahoma looked the most promising for the next day or two, so that was our initial destination. We made it about a third of the way there, stopping around 10pm at a small town called Winslow in Arizona.

Before we took off from LA, lunch was needed and the closest place was Johnny Rockets!

A short drive ahead of us:

Then time to head out...

The open road came sooner than expected as we approached San Bernardino and the road through the California Mountains.

Then came the extraordinary expanse of the Mojave Desert.

We initially intended on going via Las Vegas but apparently impending severe weather around Oklahoma meant we needed to get our skates on. We're hoping to visit on our return leg.

We stopped at a service station for fuel and to show off the snazzy new hire car: a Buick Enclave!

After finishing the PC game Fallout 3, the Mojave Desert had taken on a mystical post-apocalyptic meaning for me!

The Grand Canyon was another favoured destination which will have to wait.

The landscape of the Mojave Desert from our trek east from California through Arizona was spectacular and really left an impression. We were considering flying from LA to somewhere around Texas, but are rapt to be road-tripping it instead. A great way to see the country.
