STORM CHASING 2008-2009

Well, last night brought the rain and tonight brought the lightning... and another magnificent gustfront.

The biggest problem on some days is when multiple cells pop up all over the place making it difficult to choose which one to chase. That problem didn't occur today with a single distinct line doing it's classic Brisbane thing of approaching from the SW and mowing over the city.

With the line not far from Beaudesert, I headed towards there down the Mt Lindsay Hwy with some lovely mammatus visible:

I stopped at Greenbank for a look and didn't need to go any further. Firstly, an anviled cell to the north:

The line approaching from the SW was developing a beautiful gustfront.

Choosing the point to get the hell outta there is always tough as I want to stay as long as possible but don't want to get caught in it. I was about 2 kms down a road off the Mt Lindsay Hwy and before I got back onto it, outflow winds hit, with leaves and tiny branches filling the air. Light rain was beginning to fall as I got back onto the highway and darted north.

It seems Greenbank was a great spot to view the guster as it was already starting to look a little scrappy, even though the storm itself was far from weakening.

I wondered how far I should go when I decided to hit a little spot close to home around Rochedale to watch it go over me and enjoy the light show.

The rain stopped as quickly as it started when the line passed and the lightning frequency rose dramatically. For another good hour at least, the line was flickering constantly offering up some great anvil crawlers.

Meanwhile some new cells had popped up to the SW:

Lightning in those storms was much less frequent as I returned my attention to the NE line which was starting to head out to sea.

This lightning display was one of the best I'd seen!

Some more weaker activity came through about an hour later but didn't yield anything interesting, except of course, a massive CG bolt which I missed. Still, I couldn't really complain after the super light show earlier!
